I was wondering if I could connect my wife's iPod to my laptop. I have the latest version of iTunes installed, but have not loaded any iPod software. Am I able to connect the player via USB and transfer songs?

90% sure newest version of iTunes installs the iPod software automatically.

I don't think this is correct, but either way, the only way you can download songs off an iPod is to enable it for disk use. The way the iPod software works, you can't download the songs as they are saved on it. You have to basically use the iPod as an external harddrive. Double click the iPod icon on your desktop to open it up, then copy whatever songs onto it MANUALLY - do not use iTunes!! Then you can connect the iPod to your laptop, double click the iPod icon and drag the song files into your player on your laptop.

You can also save notes, contacts, calendars etc.
