record player question

This is an email from my old man and I can't exactly give a good answer. Can anyone help us out?

"I am thinking of upgrading our stereo. I was looking at the turntable below (PL 120) and noticed that the needle tracks at between 3 and 5 grams (click on the turntable and it will go to all the specs -- at the bottom is the cartridge specs). My question is that years ago the optimal tracking force was around 1 to 1.5 grams. Our current turntable is set at 1.5. The reason for the low weight is record wear. But I see this table uses 3 - 5 grams --- What gives???"

Thanks everyone

I'm no audiophile but I don't think it matters too much. Besides isn't that an adjustable setting anyway on most turntables? Also I thought that each stylus has it's own suggested tracking specs so then it would depend on the stylus etc..

Thank you. I didn't think it mattered much either, but I couldn't think of an intelligent way to say it.
