first off, the networks are nailing me in the head with these types of shows. second, it has to be fake. because i have been to plenty of storage auctions on the record prowl and it's always like 40 Mexican dudes who will bid on a unit with a mattress and garbage bags contents unknown..

  • i dontt get it. how does a person have any idea what to bid if there is no information available about the contents?

because you are allowed to look and base your bid on what you see. every one i have been to has had all contents visible. the auctioneers say "no one has even stepped foot in there" but that is bullshit. they rearrange it all to make it look more desirable.

nothing desirable about a big screen TV from 1994

I saw an ad for something like "Mini-Warehouse Wars".

I have some ideas for shows....

"Celebrity Garbage Wars" - People pick the garbage of well known celebrities and see who gets the most on ebay for things like an empty Rosie O'Donnell estrogen pill prescription bottle vs a Justin Bieber pubic hair.

"Professional Evangelist Wrestling" better known as the PEW where TV Evangelists wrestle each other with the winner having to faith heal the loser.

"Guess Which Hooker Has AIDS" - Even Ted Turner turned this one down.

Little People Basketball League (LPBL) with 5 foot baskets.....I'm watching this and hoping there's a "Sky Lo Lo Hook" shot.

Celebrity Rap Battle - Mickey Rourke vs. Keanu Reeves

    how about "Jack Moves"

chronicles the life of 2 kids robbing people

  • You can get lucky I managed to buy a storage unit full of records off one of those guys who goes to storage auctions and makes a living out of it. He sold me the contents for $1000 (20,000 pieces) but he probably paid a couple of hundred. It was a Dj collection who was a billboard reporter so it was all promo copies of some quality shit

A Latin dealer told me he was about to buy a huge Latin collection full of serious heat from a storage auction. Gold label Fanias etc. He told me that he reckoned he could have retired on it. The owner turned up 30mins before the auction and paid the overdue fees.

Another guy told me he once bought a storage unit contents in Ft Lauderdale and when he opened it it had some shopping trolleys and useless junk in it. He was bummed until when he was cleaning it out found $10000 in cash

Yep, this show is blowing the spot for dudes who been making serious $$ in the locker game for years. Its a tireless hustle, and to really do it right you have to have a huge truck (or two), plenty of room to store junk, be willing to be a full time junk hustler, and to really go hard you have to have a team of dudes working for you. Ive been to many storage auctions, and its not something for the half-hearted or one track minded person (like, if you're going just to find records).

The dealers who do this shit in Chicago are some of the grimiest greediest grippers I've met. I saw a dude once outbid another guy $4K on a locker that didnt have shit in it but a box of records and some weights, just to spite another guy and show him who's the boss. Doing this shit for years turns dudes into Golem

  • Cool Chris told me perhaps the most ghastly story ever about a storage locker "find" in the Bay Area. Unexpected guns, money, and drug finds got nothing on this shit.

I can't keep up with these shows now. There's another one called Auction Kings on Discovery? Guess I'll have to DV-R this one too.

ive gotten a good percentage of my records from these types over the years. i always entertained the thought of checking out the auctions, but then came to my senses. still, an interesting subculture. hopefully theyll profile more than just these two dudes

I've been waiting for a thread to discuss this crap. All these "Reality" shows are bullshit reenactments. Like "Operation Repo" And "Southern Fried Stings". They are so phony looking and they even say at the beginning that they are reenactments, so therefore aren't the stories going to be biased? These shows are 1 writer away from being Reno 911. Even Pawn Stars and American Pickers are getting redundant. I can only see that little fat dude from American Pickers get excited about an oil can so many times before it just gets tired. And his tight jacket wearing friend,,,, enough with the bikes already. We get it!! You like bikes, now move on!

granted you will occasionally find shit in these units the bidding part is a hassle. the people are definitely grimy. and with the current bed bug problem i wouldn't even touch half the shit in a unit.

I bet there are more bedbugs in Niketown and Abercrombie & Fitch than those storage units.

Some of these dudes do some pretty high turnover. I can think of a couple of fleas in NYC where about 10-20% of the sellers are actually working for one person who is out full time getting more shit. One vendor gets the clothes, one the furniture, etc etc. And they are spread out at different fleas.

When looking at the rooms they are usually looking for furniture that could contain jewelry, or better yet, old lady savings accounts - aka envelopes of cash hidden in said furniture.

One woman told me she bought 40 boxes of what she thought were records (to sell to me!) but turned out to be porno mags. Then she asked me to help her shift them. I tried to be smut peddler but it didn't really happen. She found a very happy buyer though.

There is some other show that I don't think has been mentioned that features an Antique shop with a really smug owner who asks everyone who brings shit in "how much were you thinking of asking for this?" When he knows they didn't even know WTF it was until a minute ago. Lucky for him there is no popsike for vintage gall stones or mummified cats.

I don't know if you're talking about the show or IRL, but from what I've been told they take boltcutters to the lock in front of the potential bidders at the real auctions (I've never been to one, however).

Well. You are talking about the ones on the ironically named TruTV, which are the ones that are utterly 100% fake (and so obviously so they're just plain offensive). I know most of the other ones are manipulated/sculpted/partly scripted/etc but all of the shows that AREN'T on that channel are usually based on some kernel of truth.
