I say no...maybe an area of a city is OK.

I've often wondered about the 70's/80's affinity for naming groups after larger land areas: Africa, Europe, Asia, America...probably leaving some out.

hmmm, it is a mixed bag:
    Berlin
    Boston
    Chicago
    Fountains of Wayne
    The Manhattan Transfer
    MC5[/b]
    Nazareth
    New York Dolls[/b]
    Of Montreal
    Portishead[/b]
    etc.

Not a big fan, but people are always telling me "dude, they're like, the best stadium rock band ever."

Um, OK. I appreciate dude's vocal range, I guess. But then, I'm not completely conversant in Boston's entire catalog, so maybe I'm missing out.

I think the Bay City Rollers took it to the next level by naming themselves after a town they weren't from.

There's not much Boston "catalog" to begin with - something like three albums in ten years??

I think there's a difference between having the name of a city or state as a part of your band name and having the name of your band be the name of a city or state.

I'm not really mad at either, but I prefer the former. Miami Sound Machine sounds cooler than a band named Miami.

Just as Chicago Transit Authority sounds cooler than Chicago. But they got threatened on the legal tip, so what can you do?

I like the name OSAKA MONAURAIL. The founders of the band are from Osaka, and they named the group after the monorail track near the Osaka University campus. They also ripped off the typo in MonAUrail from James Brown's "JB Monaurail" album.

But today, the band is based in Tokyo, so the name is confusing ...

    Nice. well-played, sir.

I was about to go off on this, but I realized I've already said it all over in the Adventures of Day thread. I hope the Chili Peppers charged them a grip for that.

    and how can we forget...

Detroit = one album on the Paramount label in 1971, featuring Mitch Ryder claiming his territory on most of the lead vocals!
