Got sent some details about spinoff gigs from the Red Bull Music Academy which will be happening in Melbourne late Sept / early October - I'm not involved in anyway, just posting em up for local heads that might be keen / general info :: At OPEN SESAME thursday 28th:Sassy J (A Few Among Others, Ptchwork, Switzerland) Sewing sounds together with the ease of a septagenarian seamstress, young Sassy J has been pooling global sounds with her Patchwork club night and putting the collective A Few Among Others firmly on the map of dope shit going down in Switzerland. Getting vibes from Slum Village, TY, Rush Hour, Mark de Clive Lowe, as well as designing the sought-after Patchwork flyers, Judilla is happy to do whatever???s needed for her patented brand of ???La La music??? ??? tunes for the feet, body, heart and spirit. Taay (Solaa, N.Z) Whether writing tunes for 12-piece funk fusion guerrilla force Solaa, or coming on stronger than the white helmets via his Peacemilitia project with Devin Abrams of Shapeshifter: Taay comes with some heavy artillery, getting radio play in both hemispheres. The seeds were sown when he trained as a classical violinist, and before long he was bashing keys, bass and MPC, as he conquered piano trios, orchestras and Latin bands. From dropping the bomb ???Sylphlike???, to supporting Fat Freddys Drop at Melbourne???s Forum Theatre: Taay always presents the perfect portion. Andreya Triana (Free Flo, U.K.) Just give this girl a beat and an excuse and melodies just flow right out. She might have moved up and down the UK more times than she???s sung a scale, but finding a home with latin jazz dancefloor arsonists RSL has proved the perfect place to hone her skills. Whether it???s on stage at one of her ???Free Flo??? experimental jams or in the studio with beat makers like Dobie or Aaron Jerome, Drey drops vocals like fruit from trees ??? heads up! _________________________LETTERHEADS exhibition & opening of WOODEN SHADOW gallery - 49 coppin st richmond - Friday 29th September 8pm - 1am : withCHAIRMAN MAO (EGO TRIP, U.S.A)(he co-wrote Ego Trip Book of Rap Lists & Ego trip book of Racism) In the same way that Chairman Mao had the power of an army at his fingertips, so too does Chairman Jeff Mao, harnessing the ability to make hoards of funkateers stomp til their feet ache with the timing of a well-chosen 12". The pen proves mightier than the sword, too, with Jeff penning regular columns for XXL and other publications, as well as co-authoring two books and a TV mini-series with his creative collective ego trip. Dropping parties for tastemakers, spangled clowns and music lovers alike, Jeff has been at the epicentre of the underground Hip Hop scene across America for time, as well opening peoples ears to the joy of the cover with his selection of rare versions of classic songs on his Run For Cover mix. We???re not sure it???s possible to prepare yourselves for the expedition deep into the uncharted crates, but do expect surprises from almost every style of music going. Tutuse (Touch is a Move, South Africa) Johannesburg resident Tutuse fuses soul, jazz and hip hop with the kind of ease you???d expect from a South African cultural ambassador - and he threads it all together with his own vocals in Xhosa and English. Paying his respects to dons like Curtis, Quincy and Dilla, Tutuse has imprinted his signature string and horn arrangements firmly on South Africa???s musical consciousness, dropping his album Touch is a Move as well as an album for Soul artist Camagy, picking up a nomination for the SA Music Awards in the process. Respect. Bless. Watch it. Flying Lotus (Plug Research/Stones Throw, U.S.A) He???s got female relatives whose names are like passwords into any jazz and hip hop lover???s utmost respect (hint: last name Coltrane), but that???s not the only reason why Flying Lotus has attracted props like sunshine to sunflowers. Check the pulsing hum of simply sick beats, the blissed-out jazz funk soundtracks of imaginary Sega games and a cartoonist???s sense of humour, and you can see why everyone wants his tracks, from Stones Throw, Plug Research and Jazzy Sport, to Adult Swim and Cartoon Network. We suspect he???ll one day open the Flying Lotus School of Martial Arts, aiming to teach dedicated students how to make sense of life in a deranged world with just a keyboard, some old records, a few friends and a pile of Marvel comics. Letterheads sees the skeletal structure of Graffi ti art dissected, exposed and represented by 26 esteemed members of the Australian graffi ti community. The show will be an unprecedented insight into graffi ti???s underlying understanding of the typographic structure of the letterform. Participating artists have each been assigned one letter of the alphabet to reinterpret, in order to create a collection of art that represents both the modern alphabet and the Australian arts scene. This show will blow minds. Artists involved in Letterheads are: KAB101 (SA), PUZLE, SCRAM (NSW), MERDA, REKA, MYSTERY, BONSAI, DAYS (NSW), SYNC, KANO, PRIZM, DUEL, DSKYZ, SHIME (WA), DMOTE (NSW), NUROCK, JAGI, SIRUM, PHIBS, TRANCE, SUMO, JASON JACENKO, SAGE, AEON, TAIR, PRINS (NSW)---------------------------------------------------------FRIDAY 29th SEPTEMBERcutucada! - COOKIN ON 3 BURNERS live (launch of 'Keb's Bucket' 45) - with chris gill, paprika, kano, and academy guests:Soy Bean (Paris, France)Francois Le Xuan - producer, musician, record label manager and music consultant - seems to fit more activities in each day than there are notes in a ???trane solo. When not fingering his axe or running the label, he???s to be found scoring his own mini TV shows about football, creating soundtracks for photo exhibitions and recording his Soy Bean project with Benoit Rucheton. He is influenced by the city of Paris in all its diversity, Velvet Underground, Stevie Wonder, Chet Baker, Madlib, Ravel, graphics, painting, cinema and literature. He began playing the guitar in 1990 and combines the grit of funk-blues combos with the sweet protein of a soy milk shake in a jazz bar at closing time in Saigon.Fred Cherry (Cardboard City, Australia)This man behind the world-renowned Cardboard City 7??? label might not be an octopus, but that doesn???t stop Perth???s very own heavy hitter from owning four drum kits, pounding out raw garage rock with Bobby Blackbird and the Bluejays. He???s also the driving force behind the Milton Chambers Experience, whose ???Journey to Planet Pluto??? rocked asteroid belts across the cosmos with its trippy 70s organ solo and fat cinematic funk. Inspired to grab the sticks by the De La Soul records he clocked as a kid, you know it???s gonna be hand picked and juicy.here's a bio we used for your sticker action (a press release) i can try n make it a bit more funky tomorrow morning,or u could add a sentence about your Academy &DJing steez (or combine it with the other deejay bio) and delete whatever you want?--------------------------------------------BUST A NUT - SATURDAY 30TH SEPTEMBERat First Floor:guests from academy:Tiago Andrade (The Funk Connection, Portugal) Before Tiago placed wax on wheel, he was plucking classical styles on guitars and bass. But after Funk and Disco lovers started tuning into his weekly ???Estufa??? show on Radio Zero, he found there were many homes for his 45s ??? whether he???s dropping Isley Brothers or Bootsy Collins. When he???s in the studio he rides Rhodes across deep and broken house-tronica. He???s not afraid to explore some multi-media crossovers either, combining beatboxing and camcorders to explore life???s visual rhythms and sonic images.
Tor (International Rudebwoy Recordings, U.K.) Tor???s flow has got her props from both sides of the pond, and she???s risen to the top of East London???s grime wave. Having grabbed as many plaudits as mics, Tor has flowed effortlessly from MCing on Mission FM and BBC 1xtra, to articulating the daily life of the grime and hip hop Channel U generation with dons of the scene like Fusion, First Man, Show n Prove and Soundbwoy. In addition to guesting on mixtapes and tracks by Bugz, Sway and Mpho Skeef, she has become something of an ambassador for the underground: performing to a global audience of over a billion at the Trafalgar Square celebration for the announcement of the 2012 Olympics. Full respect. MC Tatuse (see Letterheads exhibition)Faktor (Solothum, Switzerland) Many a Swiss bar has received the Faktor treatment, whose selection of classic Electro, Disco, Baltimore Breaks and Hip Hop anthems could spark even the local bowling green members club into a riot over the last bottle of Courvoissier. Taking a template from films like Beat Street and Wildstyle, and then ploughing ahead with Egyptian Lover and Cybotron-inspired jamz, Faktor works the party like some mad scientist performing a controlled reaction. Put that in your equation and smoke it. SUNDAY BEST at THE ESPYSunday 1st OctoberHip Hop JamODDISEE(Halftooth Records, USA)Oddisee shines as he quests for the perfect trinity of beats, rhymes and soul. Born in Washington D.C. and raised in Maryland, Oddisee and his "Low Budget" crew have gained a rep for bringing mo??? jams for your benjamins. The half Sudanese half African American was blessed with musical talent from both sides of his family: a flair for lyricism plus the gospel and hip hop legacy of his home soil. Oddisee is one of the globe???s finest hip hop producers working behind the curtain and has lent his touch to Gary Shider of Parliament and Funkadelic, Balil, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Talib Kweli, J-Live, Asheru and Little Brother. Meanwhile, like his friend J-Live noted, Oddisee???s an MC good enough to envy: so u know he???s got longevity. Plus GSan, Mugen, Inflatables Live, Shi Kung, Dreaded.there'll probably be some more announced ...
