Best (or worst) of the year that was. What you got SoulStrut?

A year when RIP threads seemed to become the norm, we lost Nelson Mandela, Stan Tracey, Junior Murvin, James Gandolfini, Bobby Bland, George Duke, Elmore Leonard, Lou Reed and others. Whilst on a happier note we also had a few new additions to the strut family as several struters had kids of their own. Congratulations.

The strut has trundle on. We've lost a few good poasters but gained a few too, and seen the welcome return of a few old heads. I still don't know if Skel was made a mod or not, but the troll problem seems to have diminished somewhat. The BeatOff contests have been a highlight for sure, so props to The_Non and everybody who's entered a beat. And hopefully we'll get to hear what tops the 100 list before the years out also.

Props to you all for making this a chill and interesting enough place to keep be coming back anyways.

also Kanye.

(Formerly titled: "Recycled Ventures Tracks")

I've read numerous times that The Ventures were known to recycle tracks from album to album with different titles. (Which I took as "derivative re-recordings") Having owned and heard about 83% of their albums from 1960-1970 I have yet to notice any recycled tracks (granted I've only listened to most of them 1,2 or 3 times) UNTIL TODAY!

The track 'Tomorrow's Love' from 1965's "Knock Me Out" record is IDENTICAL to 'Love Godess Of Venus' from 'Ventures In Space' (1964). I mean it's the same exact track.

Now I don't see much talk of The Ventures (or surf) on here, but I'd be curious to know if anybody else has spotted any more of these 'recycled' tracks. I'd be pleasantly surprised if a number of strutters bite on this thread.

SoulStrut, I challenge thee.

I won't go within 10 miles of a Rolling Stones gig.

Why is that?
They're not good musicians, that's why. The best musician in the Stones is Charlie by a country mile.

I agree he is. But the way they play together, people argue, is greater than the parts.
People can argue what they like.

Do you agree they're great songwriters, though?
No, not really.

Is it crazy that they're still doing it? ??????
They are earning lots of money.

The other day there was this record I wanted, and the artist was selling it on their Bandcamp page, but it was also in stock at a local shop.

My internal dilemma with this is always: Which helps the artist more?

If I buy it from the artist directly, I'm assuming they get more of the money, plus it gives them more of a direct connection with their fans, plus they have another name for their mailing list, plus whatever else.

If I buy it from the shop, in addition to helping the shop directly and the Vinyl Is Back! cottage industry indirectly, I figure that it helps the artist by letting this third party (the shop and its buyers) know that this obscure artist has at least some kind of audience that will pay money for their music, so maybe the shop will buy ten copies of their next shit instead of five, thus advancing--however infinitesimally--the artist's toehold in the human marketplace. Maybe that's patronizing, though--I don't know.

Anyway, I ended up buying it from the shop, 'cause I owe a lot to record stores.

From the artist side, though, is there a preferable move?

So Doc McCoy's post about Ninjatune in the Spooky thread has kind of confirmed a thought I've been having a while about the future of record labels - namely that many are becoming de facto sound library labels.

A friend who runs a successful independent label (one that does both reissues and new artists) told me years ago that the label activity per se basically breaks even and it is the sync/licensing end that actually makes money.

If the only viable revenue stream is commercial/film/TV usage, aren't these labels essentially functioning as sound library operations? I know the whole A&R end is different, but still.

Hey,

With the snowy/icy weather we've had in the 'Big East,' the gym membership has really paid for itself on the shoveling tip. Since the snow hasn't been that deep, I've decided to 'man up' and get the exercise (instead of using the snowblower). I've been sonnin' the young boys in the neighborhood with my snow shoveling 'diesel-ness.' Shit, 44 is the new 20, what? Fitness (post 40) is a beautiful thing!!!

Peace,

Big Stacks from Kakalak
