Hey Strutters,

My brother Will and I were having a conversation about the above statement that our record collecting buddies make. Ultimately, we came to the conclusion that this statement doesn't really apply to us. Our collective sentiment was that our variety of tastes allows us to find records of value in any record store we visit. Really, it seems that every record store has a 'strong genre' or so that aligns with our tastes in some way. I liken it to playing b-ball (sort of) such that you take what a given store (or the defense regarding offensive approach) gives you in terms of its offerings. At minimum, sometimes I'll use a not-so-stellar store to replace bad copies of common goodies that I own. Any thoughts (sorry for the ramble)?

Peace,

Big Stacks from Kakalak

For awhile now, it seems like every battle I go to or watch online they rarely play funk or boogie anymore. It's all these derivative slow g-funk type beats. The only explanation I can find is that since they film the battles & sell the footage, it's cheaper for them to license these beats than it is to get the rights for the original funk & boogie. Any ideas? Anyone here dj at any of these?

Set in 1976, Toby Jones plays a documentary sound engineer who finds himself employed by a notorious low-budget Italian horror studio.
-the new donald fagen is fucking amazing (minus 1 or 2 songs), has grown on me big time. "miss marlene" is the best song ever written about bowling. the klezmer version of isaac haye's "out of the ghetto" is ridiculous and incredibly ill-advised (although portions of it are brilliantly arranged): when don is talking about the ghetto i think he is reffering to the old european jewish ghettos. "not the same without you" is another highlight (check that harmonica solo). incrdible musicanship throughout, don presents a new set of young lions.

-carter jefferson is excellent modal ish from one of woody shaw's main men; one of the few muse records that is kinda tougher to find.

chords: http://www.hakwright.co.uk/music/tab/not-the-same-without-you.shtml

What program do you use for downloading/exporting from camera?

right now I'm using adobe bridge for importing. Should I be using Lightroom?

2. What program do you use for previewing images?

Never really liked any program for this based upon speed. The more and more I use Adobe Lightroom I feel like this is the way to go.

3. What program do you use for organizing?

Right now I'm using Adobe Bridge but thinking about just doing everything in Adobe Lightroom.

4. What file name / file structure do you use to keep track of everything?

Right not I download everything to one folder with a date as such 2012 12 31. The I go back and label it with an extension after import like 2012 12 31-Kate Upton Beach Shots

5. Do you go through and dump shitty photos right away?

I don't. Too much time and I have a huge hard drive.

6. How do you sort out the "keepers" out of a photo session?

I usually just edit in Photoshop and then save as something different from the default camera file name like kateupton_1. Then if they are really good photos I copy them to an addition folder called "Keepers" and have like minded photos folders there like "Supermodels".

Rescue Me singer Bass dies at 72

The American soul singer, Fontella Bass, best remembered for the hit single Rescue Me, has died of complications following a heart attack. She was 72.

She had been in poor health for much of the past seven years.

Rescue Me reached the top of the US R&B chart in 1965 and is one of the best known soul songs. It has been covered by many artists.

Fontella Bass had a powerful voice and a background steeped in music.

Her mother was gospel singer Martha Bass, one of the Clara Ward Singers and Fontella Bass began performing at a young age, singing in her church's choir at the age of six.

Like many of her generation, she graduated to soul and R&B in the 60s, signing to Chess Records.

She first found success in a duet with Bobby McClure on Don't Mess Up a Good Thing and You'll Miss Me (When I'm Gone).

She co-wrote Rescue Me, a song her daughter Neuka Mitchell said "held a special place in her heart".

But it took years of legal battles for her to receive full royalty rights to the song. A final settlement was reached more than 20 years after the song was first released.

Ms Mitchell said her mother was an outgoing person. "She had a very big personality. Any room she entered, she just lit the room up, whether she was on stage or just going out to eat."

Fontella Bass was married to the great jazz trumpeter, Lester Bowie, who was her musical director.

She died in the city where she was born, St Louis, Missouri.
(C) BBC
