and let's just forget the third one even happened.

Which do you prefer? I prefer #2 and Applonia (sp?).

  • I used to think I liked 2 better, but I re-watched both a few months ago and 1 is my favorite.

    BOARDWALK EMPIRE!!!!!!

  • I haven't seen II in a while but watched it last night. The ending is pretty anti-clamatic.

  • oh, and godfather 1. something about it still being somewhat of a b-movie, and thusly a little more frenetic, makes a better watch for me.

I watched both at xmas and definitly I

  • batmon's disdain for the white gangster genre is well known.

thing is, rather than present truly unimaginative, derivative or downright *bad* examples of the form (of which there are plenty), he always plays himself by talking shit about movies/shows that are actually good...like Boardwalk Empire and Donnie Brascoe and the Sopranos.

I'll go with I. I like the vintage New York setting and it has less Diane Keaton damage than II does.

maybe all people dont appreciate the godfather for it's "gangster" qualities.

has mr batmon ever considered THAT? HUH?

  • seriously people?

Godfather II is by far the richer movie.

Are there people that actually prefer 2 over 1.

    You found this boring?

I'm glad I don't have to choose. The scenes at the hospital and, then, the restaurant in the first one. Young Vito stalking on the rooftop or Michael in Cuba in the second one. I'd be hard pressed to choose a favorite, luckily I can watch them both in stunning hi-def Blu-ray, which if you don't have, go get that. A couple times, I've found myself watching on regular TV, then paused and put in the disc to do it up right.

    1 all day long

the young vito scenes ruin part II

  • Definitely 2 for me...The scope is much larger. All the scenes with Deniro were amazing too.

The correct answer is The Conversation

But really, it's GF1 all the way.

Godfather II is an unimpeachably great movie for many reasons, including a much richer role for John Cazale who is amazing. But it sprawls and tries to cover too much territory. The Vito story could be pulled out into its own movie without irreparably harming either narrative, as seen in the crappy version where they put the entire series in order. Godfather One is not without its flaws, but over many, many viewings of both films the first installment edges out the second. Plus, it has Sterling Hayden.

Plus, it seems fairly pointless arguing GF1 vs GF2. Really what people should be getting heated over is Scorsese vs. Coppola.

  • The books.

Without a doubt the first, my feelings pretty much echoing dollar_bin's. The second one is a fantastic movie but the back and forth between Vito and Michael really breaks up the connection I have with the characters.

Plus as a self contained arc the set up of the wedding at the beginning compared to the christening at the end is outstanding.

    B/w

Really what people should be getting heated over is Leone vs. Coppola.

    B/B/w Carlito's Way!
