I was wondering when someone was gonna namedrop Swervedriver.
I do think the follow-up 'Mescal Head' was a better effort. They had some songs to go with those big guitar riffs.

Ooh, I forgot that one. I got to see them perform the album in its entirety a couple of years ago...

DEPRESSING BECAUSE YOU DONT LIKE THE MUSIC OR DEPRESSING BECAUSE THE WHOLE VIBE OF THAT MUSIC WAS, WELL - DEPRESSING?

depressing because yeah a lot of it is depressing, but also cos i wouldn't ever go back to any albums mentioned thus far save the odd pavement nostalgic play or loveless for the kafillionth time (or and maybe slowdive, but pygmalion not souvlaki)

  • I forgot about Tom Verlaine's album "Warm and Cool" from 1992 on Rycodisk.

All instrumental and simply fantastic. Really moody and atmospheric...kind of sountracky. The the bass player and drummer for Television back him on it as well. Probably one of my favorite albums of all time, and sadly i'm 99% positive it was NEVER issued on vinyl. Anybody ever see a copy?

Unfortunately, most things sound great compared to the rock music of the past few years

TOP TEN "ROCK" SONGS FROM THE '90s[/b]

    1990: "Home Sweet Home"[/b]
This is a sing-a-long: "In separate room I hear them screaming through the walls, I'm locked away. Listen to the vicious things they say..."

"You hate your children because they act so much like you..."

An anthem among me and my friends who were beaten half to death by our fathers. A great band that played some of the shittiest clubs in the Bay Area (pre-Hyphy). I saw them for the first time at Berkeley Square, around the time of this song, and I remember joking with my friend about the drunken asshole with the receeding hairline at the bar who was slovenly looking at every girl within fifteen feet of his beer bottle. Then someone announced the headlining band, SAMIAM, and the drunk dude--Jason Beebout--got up off his stool, went on stage, and sang his fucking nuts off.

"There's too much love for me in this house, let me out."

    1991: "If You Had Lips"[/b]
Any song that starts with "HEY SHITMOUTH!" and has the chorus "I've never known anyone who meant bent so much to me" is automatically ranked #1* (Although, "Sick Drunk Blow Job" off the same album, is a close second). If you never saw this band then I feel kinda sorry for you. One of the world's best.

"A number of years have passed between our legs/ Taste your buttery muffin"

    *Honorable Mention

    1992: "The Sport"[/b]
I bought my first car in '92. A 1973 Chevy Chevelle, 350 'big block'. As Too $hort says, "My trunk could kill." I had 800 watts of good will riding slumpsided, and this song, by a country mile, got more play than anything else. The low end is absolutely devastating. Homeboys at stop lights couldn't figure out what the fuck was going on. All they knew was I had more slump and more grind than them... and that shit ain't even rap?

    1993: "Doris" b/w "Wang Dang Doodle"[/b]
"She sings her little song like a flag." There was a bootleg video of PJ during the tour in support of this album. Seeing her topless and practicing her vocal scales while washing her shirt in the toilet backstage at a club is reason enough to hunt it down. "They'll be snuff juice everywhere."

    * Honorable Mention (great drummer, fun live band, crazy students in college namesake)

    1994: "Driveway to Driveway"[/b]
I shit my pants at this show. Standing in the back, feeling kinda sickly, watching Mac (well, okay, Laura) and then... POW! I dropped the deuce. I left early, but what I heard was good. Shitting aside (what's up Dizzy?), perhaps the more appropriate song from this album to exemplify this exercise would be "Why Do You Have To Put A Date On Everything?", but the whole driveway to driveway drunk thing wins.

    1995: "I Like Fucking" b/w "I Idolize You"[/b]
"Hey! Do you believe there's anything beyond troll guy reality?"

I have heard people express aversion to this record, yet I watched it change many women I know. Not always comfortably (faddish cluthcing at the "movement" that followed), but it is good to see them really get into it--screaming with abandon.

It gets so hard/ Just to be okay/ Sometimes being happy baby is what I'm most afraid of/ Baby, you know, it gets so hard for me to fight/ I don't know how I guess I never did/ Why don't you show me now how to lose control? / (She's so very, I don't care)."

Plus, there is rarely a time when this comes on and I can't not wait to hear her voice break on the "I want it now!" parts. If you got the first copies of this 45 there were bumperstickers included.

"Just cuz my world, sweet sister/ Is so fucking goddamn full of rape/ Does that mean my body must always be a source of pain?/ Just cuz I named it right here sweet chickade/ Don't mean for a minute you should think I'm opposite of anything/ But if you wanna know for sure I'll tell you/ We're not gonna prove nothing, nothing/ Sittin around watching each other starve/ What we need is action/strategy/ I want, I want, I want, I want it now"

And for the douchebags who can't get with the radical possibilities of pleasure, babe, I included a cover of a Turner funk staple by a woman who exudes pussy galore.

    1996: "La Ca??da De Latino America"[/b]
I am sure Herm, the Brown Maniacz, and other Educated Vatos got with Los Crudos a decade ago. This band, and specifically this record--a split 12" w/ Spitboy, presented in a chipboard letterpress jacket w/ newspaper insert--are 100% on. (Herm, Page Me if you need the time on this bands other hits: "No Me Vengan A Salvar," "Tierra De Libertad"). Who wants to take a stab at translating this joint?

    1997: "Comb the Carpet"[/b]
    "We're staging hold-ups, man!"

    1998: "Anthemic Amendments"[/b]
POZ drum + Frank Foster scratching + Dyke Mafia + Punk Rock Cellist = "Over my dead body."
Shelly Doty, the woman responsible for the guitar work (and moaning) on this album is a remarkable woman. If you ever get the chance to see "the lost lesbian offspring of Jimi Hendrix" I would advise you not to miss it. She won't go down. "Each on take one." SAVE YOURSELF[/b].

(1998 was also the year of the French Chanteuse)

    1999: "Aquaphilia"[/b]
We always meet tomorrow. We always meet today. We always meet yesterday.
