Ok,so I'm not really a huge fan of this genre but I do like some of it.I've been working on trying to emulate this sound on an acoustic drumset.I was inspired by this drummer dude named Johnny Rabb who has this shit on lock.I'm seriously intrigued by the notion of being able to freely improvise in this style.I can't even tell you artists that I like since I've only heard some random compilations and whatnot. I'm looking for a spacey "heady" kinda sound as opposed to a strictly "club/dance" kinda sound. Can anyone recommend artists or compilations that have a lot of variety? Obviously this music is fast and lively, but I'm not looking for anything too frantic or "hard".So,plaese to recommend something that is not too overthetop but nevertheless perks the ears and head.Thanks.

  • start with:

    reprazent - new forms 2cd
    photek - modus operandi
..and check out some of the early V recordings comps, they had the organic drum sound on lock.

Peshay does a couple of cool remixes, one for DJ Shadow and one for Ruby. His Miles from Home is pretty good too, IMO.

  • Just get the Torque compilation and crank the bass up real loud and you're goldie.

    early Full Cycle stuff
    Paradox
    Breakage
    Fanu
    Amit
    Photek
    Source Direct
    Icons

... start with these. Mostly basic stuff + 3 newcomers. This is all stuff that is pretty focused on drums.

Getting familiar with classic material is always a good look.

Some bigger labels to check for:

    Reinforced
    Metalheadz
    Full Cycle
    Moving Shadow
    Good Looking/Looking Good
    V

I actually got lucky and scooped up Reprazent on 4lp for $5 recently. Still looking for the 5lp one.

for newer folks, check the stable of material on Hospital, especially nu:tone. I also quite enjoy Makoto from japan, he's on Good Lookin'.

Half of the artists listed so far are fashion boutique braekz, not DnB or Jungle.

    the champion sound

  • Drum and bass sounds like someone listened to a 50 year olds impression of contemporary music and tried to emulate it. Its all thump-thump-thump. You cant even sing along to it. Its monotonous crap. I quite like the jungle remix of one barrington levy song but thats it. Fuck off.

Dolo Yeung, great track you mentioned but that's actually a happy hardcore beat with Barrington Levi over the top.

If you want to hear the real raw stuff, you ain't gonna find that on any LPs, you need to cop the live mixtapes, 'cos 99% of the best drum & bass tunes are 12" or dubplate only. Have a look on here and cop some ill mixes:
