great record, but not as funky as you'd think from his hit. it's a little psychy.
there are several european lps that are funky as hell...

    dont forget..

Word. We are getting off track here.

It seems like you want lp's with a "funk 45" sound, no?

Just, you wouldn't call the FIRST Earth Wind & Fire LP a funk record? Would you say it's more of an R&B record?

definitely not an R&B record (but i know what you were saying)... okay thats the closest to being a Funk record but would i call it "Funk"... no. its the funkiest Soul album they have so thats how i classify it.

Most of the albums by Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band were uneven, but In The Jungle, Babe and You're So Beautiful.

    You really think so?

I think Together is the best start-to-finish listen:

Damn, how could I forget? You're on the money, Faux. Definitely that one, too! Yeah, the Together album is one cold-blooded piece of wax. And most of it was recorded live, too!

I guess I was thinking of Express Yourself (which has some experiments that don't quite come off) and The Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band (the first LP, which has more filler than a ballpark frank).

Yes, that's it...and with vocals too, if possible.

You could also call this thread "NORTHERN SOUL LP BONERS"..

really, all those beginning diggin records you were on the search for:

    ewf
    ohio players
    james brown
    fred wesley
    marva whitney
    sly stone

    etc

...these are the ones that are "essential" in my opinion. you cant (rather shouldnt) move forward in music without knowing or owning these artists and their music.

maybe they dont have the best Funk LPs but they are the stepping stones one should know before trying to grab the smaller and private pressed records that we all crave for.

Totally agree. I have a lot of those...except for Marva Whitney.

I also forget Tina Turner, her version of "Funkier than a Mosquito's..." is pretty off the hook.

    What?
    Com'on Jinx!!

    Earth Wind and Fire _ S/T 1970 _ Warner
Marvin Gaye _ Trouble Man _ Motown

If those aren't "Soul classics" (and ESSENTIAL!!), I don't understand.

    B.

Great records definitely. Just looking for something with a harder, funkier sound.

Not too much good stuff in the recent release pile, so when something good comes along it's worth representing:

Essential? Probably not, but I love it so.

This definitely qualifies. Up there with the greats in my mind.

soul searchers 'salt of the earth' (is that too 'rare groove'? I'd call ashleys roach clip funk though)

exactly what is the difference between the soul searchers and the other artists mentioned?

i thought "rare groove" described the actual records, not the music

  • The Counts "What's up front - that counts"

    I hope it qualifies;)

one of the few funk lp's that i would actually call "essential". a stone classic. the meters too.

    Niceness.

Anyone heard Mark IV S/T (on Mercury)? Mostly, soul...but a few really good uptempo cuts.

  • Shaft in Africa - Johnny pate

    this is essential to me

  • I thought that shit was kinad weak. Like an album full of "Funky Nassau"

  • Benny Gordon and the soul brothers - Tighten up. A great funk lp that seems to slip under the radar a bit.

I have a few of the followup singles - I got to say, "Funky Nassau" (the song, not the LP) was the best they ever did.
