how to sample from turntable to PC?

I want to get my music from the turntable to my PC. I just want to be able to listen to my music on my PC so the best quality isn't always necessary. I'm more concerned with doing this cheap but I would like to start trying some producing so if it's not cost prohibitive I'd be willing to spend some extra dough for a better recording. So where do I begin? The obvious would be an audio input card. Which one should I get? I'm using a Dell PC with Windows XP. Do I connect the turntable directly to the input card or from the amp to the PC? I've heard some input cards act as there own amp and give a better audio recording that way. Is that true?Drop knowledge.

I'm assuming, seeing that you're name is DJ[/b] Arcadian, that you own a mixer. All you need is a cheap soundcard like this Audiophile 2496

and just plug an out from your mixer into it and record on any number of programs that's out there.
