I can't listen to Archie Whitewater's Cross Country without being very very close to crying no matter how I felt before. Most definitely the best song I know. I listened to it this morning. I love every single note of it. It touches my soul. Really! What's your favorite sentimentalizing song? There's gotta be at least one song that makes you feel melancholic.

  • I am not really a Tupac fan, but "Dear Mama" does make my eyes water almost everytime. I think that is the only rap song ever that got me almost to the point of tears.

    "Ease My Troublin' Mind"

The only song that's ever made me cry like an infant, after the passing of my Great Uncle Shorty.

One that came close last night:

"Mama's Dead" from the Black Ceasar soundtrack.

That's one song that I hope I'll never have to be comforted by.

The Boyz2Men "Mama" song used to rip me up, I haven't heard it in awhile but I'm sure it stil would.

There are a few songs that bagpipe and drum bands play that knock me out too, like Amazing Grace, Danny Boy, and one other one that I forget the name.

It's funny, people don't even realize what a damn depressing song that is - they think "oh, cheezy 70's AM radio hit" and hum along to the melody, but that last verse is some devastating shit, really raw and sad as hell.

I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
    And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn`t understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken
    Despite encouragement from me
    No words were ever spoken
    And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
    Alone again, naturally

This might get me laughed at, but the songs that get to me the most tend to be old standards, stuff like:

"Why Try To Change Me Now" by Frank Sinatra

"A Ghost of a Chance" by Chet Baker

"If You Could See Me Now" by Billy Eckstine

"Lush Life" by Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane

and so on and so on, when I wanna wallow in my sorrows, I bust out the old
Jazz vocal records and pour some scotch...

I think the brilliance of this song, it that the lyrics are on some slit your wrist vibes while the piano/melody is sooooo happy sounding, it phucks up your head on some left brain vs right brain tip....i almost wish the lyrics were different so i could listen to it more often without feeling like wearing a trenchcoat and painting my nails black

also a song that makes me feel sad is

jeff buckleys last goodbye...more eerie since he died after that album that track was on...and another tune on that album "halleliah", is it a leonard cohen cover? anyhow his vocals with his guitar is just....

    No, seriously???

Marvin Gaye - "Flying High (In The Friendly Sky)". That song can make me cry over some of the stupid shit I saw people do to themselves, and it always kept me in check when I was starting to go too far into something I knew was strictly downhill. The ultimate addiction song in my book. That line about "I know I???m hooked my friend -To the boy who makes slaves out of men" is so on point. I had the lyrics hanging on the wall for a long time, as a reminder. In fact, a lot of Marvin's stuff can be tearjerking.

Plus a lotta the other ones you sensitive muhfuckas have listed.

  • creedence clearwater revival's- "someday never comes"

i love you pops despite everything.

  • Utah Phillips w/ Ani Difranco - Korea

  • That Dierdre Wilson Tabac song "I Can't Keep from Crying Sometimes" has gotten me on a number of occasions. The tears have always been happy, though.

When I was in high school it was Mobb Deep's " Drink Away the Pain"

  • I'm more about particular performances, like Marvin Gaye's 'Star Spangled Banner' at the '83 NBA all star game.

"At the time, singing the anthem was for the most part a straightforward job -- shoulders square, sing it straight like the hymn that it is. But for this game, Gaye took the anthem to a new level.

Lon Rosen remembers it well -- he was the director of promotions for the Los Angeles Lakers, the team hosting the All-Star game that year. He says Gaye's one rehersal was bumpy. By this point in his life, Gaye was battling a serious drug addiction. And on game day, the singer was running perilously late. But then the lights dimmed, and Gaye made history.

One year later, Marvin Gaye was dead, shot by his own father."

How about Aretha's fill-in for Pavarotti at the Grammys a few years back? 8 minutes of prep time, and she sang Nessu dorma, a big Puccini piece. It was insane and really emotional.

    That's a good one.

Also "Theme From Spartacus", and yes, Kanyeezy's "Hey Mama". It came on in the car the other day and I had to shut it off cause it hit a little too close to home.

You work late nights just to keep on the lights

Cuz a nigga cheatin, telling you lies, then I started to cry
