The Not-Game Of Thrones TV THREAD

I liked the season finale of Silicon Valley, but there's always so much "tensity." I wonder if they'd ever get to a point on the show where Pied Piper is secure, although then there are less stakes and that wouldn't reflect the tech reality as much?
Does anyone watch Jerrod Carmichael's show? I really like it, and he tackles issues in a way that isn't (usually) preachy, annoying or a turn off.
Does anyone watch Man Seeking Woman? I've gone from absolute hatred of this show to true blue fan of the show. The season finale was hilarious with the robot sequence!
Always Sunny has fallen off a bit.
I also like You're The Worst.
What do you like that's not Game of Thrones?

Watched a couple of episodes of Horace and Pete, mostly off the strength of the morning-after-sex-with-a-trans clip. Terrific bit of writing and acting.

I like the theatre stage production, could happily watch Edie Falco read from the phone book and appreciate how they are handling Buscemi's mental health storyline.
I find there is a slightly hazy and comforting effect due to no one wearing any colours...just lifeless, muted replicas of what used to be a colour.

But - the pathetic-and/or-awful-white-people genre is getting suffocating. Sticking in social commentary now and then just doesn't cut it. And using awful racism and sexism to make a point about how awful racism and sexism are is so fucking tired. It's like the Junot Diaz thing - let me keep writing from a teenage POV so I can get away with talking about women in the most base and juvenile manner possible.

I want to like it because it's not like anything else out there and Louis CK put his all on the line with it. But instead of finding its uniqueness refreshing, I just find it exhausting.

I LOVE BBC2's Only Connect - the most impossible and awkward quiz show on earth. I swing back and forth between wanting to rest my head on the host's bosom and being terrified of her. Is this English sex appeal in a nutshell?

Bassie, did you ever watch Lucky Louie? I have no urge to watch H&P, and LL was just awful.
I don't understand why a guy that's so funny wants to churn out depressing shit.
I just investigated Only Connect, you have a lotta head resting space! It's really weird and seems like there's wiggle room for different answers?

I love Louie CK but Lucky Louie was not very good to me.  'Louie', on the other hand, was incredible.  I see H&P as Louie's attempt to be really individualistic (Tomorrow Night/Pootie Tang levels, I'm talking) and still accessible... but it's still very strange... like how every episode has its own rhythm/tone.  I don't love every moment of it, but it's pretty fucking great compared to most of the other stuff I see on tv.

There are so many diverse voices out there in comedy, that I don't need Louie to carry that torch.  He does so in his own way, which is more than most big name comedians do.

It is exhausting and yes, he is a sad clown.

Louis CK did a great podcast with Mark Maron talking about his goals and motivation for "Horace & Pete" which convinced me that he really does have a vision that just happens to be as incredibly dark as it can be funny. It also let me know that I don't need to watch the show, life is real enough without that kind of heavy "entertainment" in my downtime. But I do respect his creative choices.

Personlly I've been really enjoying "Veep" this season, one of the only shows that makes me really laugh these days. And I'm excited for the return of "You're The Worst".

The first season of Silicon Valley was cool--when they were on the come up and winning, but I can only take so much of socially awkward people; it's painful to watch them exist. White people were cooler when they were flaying their enemies instead of patent trolling them. Cowardice is offensive in all forms, at all times.

No, never saw Lucky Louie. I did watch a few episodes of his other show, Louie, I think it was? Where the cast seemed to change with multiple people playing same roles show to show?
My brother is a big fan and he said CK's tone became much more dark after his divorce. It seems to be a particularly long dark phase.

Yea, Only Connect is like the NYT cryptic crossword! I'll stick to my lane with Jeopardy which is like connect-the-dots in comparison.

Lol of all the things I'd expect to get rep\d on theStrut Only Connect would be pretty low on the list. I'm a fan, and of Victoria Coren Mitchell's buxom baby bumpness as well. I like the word wall and I'm surprisingly good at the missing vowels round, but a fair amount of the rest of it passes pleasantly over my head.

Lady Dynamite anyone?  Like Louie, Maria Bamford is a real acquired taste, but I think it's hilarious.  It was a bit hard to follow the format at first, but I'm getting used to it.

I don't watch much TV, but I'm feeling Ruth as Tulip on Preacher. Show could be darker though it needs to go darker then TWDead. - Diego

She won some kind of world poker final (and wrote a great article for the Guardian about it and the death of her father, her childhood etc). Married to Mark from Peep Show.

Watched episode 1 of American Crime; surely Strut Nip to the Nth degree? Two white victims from an illegal Mexican drug dealing rapist and a black woman respectively, I was watching and wondering if Trump wrote the script. Played into every fear of middle America... but ignoring that it was well paced and entertaining, but not doing enough to really demand further viewing.

I am familiar. I've even read her book about trying to make a porno.

Although I can't say I celebrate her entire catalogue

I'm enjoying Maron, although I know some folks might find him insufferable. The writing in it is super subtle/light touch, which works if you have genuinely funny people doing it (which I think he does).

2 shows I'm watching right now that are pretty good.

Mr.Robot - First season was great. 2nd season is starting off strong.

Stranger Things - I'm only on the 2nd episode, but so far I'm digging it. An 80's cross between E.T. and Goonies but darker with a slight Stephen King/Poltergeist vibe.

I thought Mr Robot was great till it all went full Fight Club. The whole fictional mental health condition just seemed unnecessary, that and the teenage political grandstanding kinda ruined what was otherwise a great show. Why couldn't he just have been a hacker with some borderline issues, they could've still told practically the same story and it would be less of a complete ripoff as well.

I've watched the first few episodes of BrainDead and though it was pretty good. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is pretty easy to watch. It seems to have some bad reviews, but they seem to focus on it's lack of bite as a political satire, maybe they were expecting something else based on the maker's previous work, The Good Wife. Having never seen that it didn't occur to me as a fault. I just thought of it as a fair light Washington based invasion thriller Twilight Zone type show, kinda X files meats They Live.

I'm on Ep 5.  I didn't really like it in the first ep, but it's really grown on me.

It's gotten all Small Wonder of late...

Let me know how you feel when you're done. It's now my fav Netflix show of all time. But I could see how for some it's not their thing.

Any fans of Off The Air on Adult Swim? It reminds me of VHS tapes we used to pass around in the 90s, with a soupçon of MTVs Liquid Television.  It's on at 4AM, so set your DVR.

Seems like Grade A stoner tv. putting something like that together would be a good gig to have

Finished it last night after plowing through the last 4 eps in one go.  Can't say much to diss - great season!  I zoned out a bit in the last ep cause it felt like a bit too much rehash (before a great ending), but that's my fault for watching it all at once like that.

Wonder if they'll continue with this thread in the next season, or add a new story?

EDIT: Nevermind - looks like more of the former: http://nerdist.com/stranger-things-creators-talks-future-seasons-for-the-show/

Has anyone been watching Showtimes series Roadies? So far it's ok, still building character story lines but is picking up.

When I was younger I thought about being a roadie. But I liked the thought of sleeping in my bed instead of a bunk. Pooping in a toilet I can sit on instead of a bag or holding it for hours on the road.

    *kanye shrug*
