    I don't know about modern rock groups playing homage to classic rock.
    But answer songs were a staple in the 50s and 60s.

    When I saw the thread the 2 songs that launched a thousand answers were I Can't Stand the Rain (OK, maybe just a few by the original artists, since I can't think of any answers by others, but it seems to me there are some....)

    And Roxanne Roxanne, which launched 2 rappers named Roxanne and endless answer songs.

    UGK "Choppin' Blades" is an homage to E-40 "Captain Save-A-Hoe," but again, not sure that meets the criteria you were looking for.

    I called this out a minute ago. I like The -Dream but he's mining the hell out of Prince's 1999 electronica steez.
