I m putting together a mix/compilation at the moment and the label had some issues licensing stuff that now belongs to major labels. So i m looking to replace two tracks that were vital for the mix with something similar that doesnt belong to any major label; as the deadline is really close and my whole record collection far away i thought i d give it a shot on here.
I m not looking to win a rarity contest with my picks here, they just fitted in perfectly, and the mix goes through a lot of genres of not only vintage stuff..

First track was Rhythm Makers - Soul on your side

and Sam Dees - Signed Miss Heroin

thanks..

Maybe the later version of it they did as GQ "Disco Nights"?

but probably not easier to licence...

    or this:

  • How would licensing a rare indie record be any easier?

Lotus Land reissued this a few years ago. I'm sure they can be helpful with the licensing.

thanks for the suggestions, looking into the GQ thing now. Spice & that 7" are really dope, but a little too "full" if you know what i mean. "Soul on your side" is pretty stripped down, no strings, very concentrated on the bare groove etc.
looking for something in that sense, plus any uptempo soul like the sam dees joint, without too much action, heavy drums, strings etc.
keep em coming. if i use something suggested on here and it actually works out with licensing as well, i m gonna let go
a raer to the one who hipped me onto it.

    uptempo soul:

  • Sam Dees 'Signed Miss Heroin' is unreplaceable.
I think Paul Mooney in the UK holds the rights for this. You can contact him thru soul-source.co.uk or via his publishing company millbrand. http://www.millbrand.com/

not too sure about the lyrics on this one (borderline corny I think) but I really like the music
Band of thieves - "America" (Ovation)

Nice music but I guess I would be ODD if a german guy includes this in his compilation

Hm, no indies so this won't be a big help but I thought of these because of "stripped-down-ness" :

    Sun - Radiation Level

Switch - You Pulled A Switch

    arista, capitol etc wont work..

we tried to license 24 carat black as well, oddly enough it no belongs to universal.
i thought numero did a reissue of this just recently?

So is this a mix, or a comp? Or is it both?

If it's a mix, how about leaking a 'directors cut' with all of the tracks you wanted to use?

Not sure if this is the stuff you're looking for. It is reggae disco but quite stripped down,
I already played this in my house sets and it works well in that context.

I prefer the GQ version :beerbang:

Sam Dees - Signed Miss Heroin

The sparse opening part of the Sam Dees sounds a lot like a Marc Moulin track - that is, before the signing really kicks in. If it's the 'cosmic soul' part of the track that you like though, it kind of reminds me of Rhythm Heritage Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow

This was reissued by Lotusland, too, 2 or 3 years ago.
