Ahead of its time?

Not Funny?

Implosion?

Racialism?

Typical 'throw a comedian in a sitcom' formula?

What happened?

She was kinda funny when she first started out.

"Moraaaaaaaan..."

Some of her standup is really dirty. I was watching one once at my parents' house and my mom came thru and wouldn't leave. Some of the shit she was talkin about w/moms in the room made me wanna leave my body.

What the hell made you think of her?

    Fantasy?

    Oral fixation?

    Asian Mothers?

Today I saw a repeat of Sex In the City and she was on.
I commented to my ladyfriend that she had a little heat BITD day and had a sitcom.

I was just wondering about the show and not HER per se.

In a few interviews I've heard with her it seems like she spends a lot of her time on the fringes of the.sexual underground, hsnging with (and more) sex workers, porn stars etc. She's certainly not shy about it. Not that funny, but interesting.

Many of my favorite comedians of the last 20 years died way too young.

    Hicks, Hedberg, Schimmel, Kinison, Hope.....

    Yet Louie Anderson still lives....

    Coincidence??

    YOU SOUND YOUNG

You have to be under a certain age if you don't remember that Margaret was skinny when she first became popular. Kind of like this girl I once dated who was eight years younger than me and never knew that The Andy Griffith Show was ever in color, since at the time you only saw the B&W eps on TV.

Her show wasn't good. Just really bad writing and it never gelled well. Amy Hill was prob the best thing about it. Cho was pretty bitter about the whole affair: the network hamstrung the show from jump and it also got murdered by Asian American critics

yeah, she talks about fuck sessions at the SF Armory, owned by the (extreme?) bondage site kink.com

@rock: dane cook is, amazingly, true stand-up too. Now more than ever. Your comedy heroes would've given him a shot, and probably dug him. Not like that means you must, but it's worth considering.
I think Bob Hope lived to see triple digits- U gotta B hella 0ld 2 ask 4 m0r3 lol

Cho is funny. Never saw her sitcom or whatever that is, but she's funny.

I'll re-assert my claim that anyone who makes a living on stage making people laugh (even if the people are idiots) is funny. Amazingly funny. Funnier than anyone you're likely to meet in your whole life.

Dane Cook is funny in the same way that Gallagher is funny. As in "not funny."

Post a funny Dane Cook bit if you can find one. The guy is Jim Carrey Jr. only worse.

Dane Cook is a hack. He is NOT funny AT ALL. Not even slightly funny. Dude is just straight terrible. I have no idea why anyone would think he is funny.

I compel you to listen to Marc Maron's wtfpodcast where he interviews dude. Dane Cook's history may surprise you. He's way more interesting than you want to admit.

That leather pants Comedy Central special went crazy, and his career went LL Cool J: chicks thought he was hot, and the alt-comedy nerd consortium decided he was no good. Whether or not he was exactly your thing didn't matter: it was decreed he was a hack.

The three jokes he was accused of stealing, they're not very good. Not unique. Not specific or significant enough to logically affect how you should view him. Too bad they became attached to "he stole them from Louis CK" (this shit happens all the time, and they worked it out privately--but dude has tons of material and knows the do's and dont's: he's not stupid. Carlos Mencia* he's not.).

He's not my mainest dude, but to deny that he's funny is nonsense. He sold out Madison Square Garden like three consecutive nights. There's a handful of comics that have ever done that. Not like that's an instant stamp of comedy greatness, but it's undeniable. The guy is funny. To a lot of people.

Apparently, his act is now getting super personal and honest. The realest shit on earth, true stand-up. I'd love to see it. Jokes is one thing, but stand-up

*Carlos Mencia is also a great comic. His ruthless ambition can overshadow that: he's got a problem.

You know who's the awesomest singer ever, ever, ever? Barry Manilow. Because he's, like, really really successful, and he's sold out lots and lots of shows in lots and lots of venues. He's just like GREAT because of this, and no one should ever say otherwise, because he's just like great. The realest shit on Earth or something. For real. Like WOWARAMA. Golly Jeezus rama lama ding dong and stuff hoo boy. I swear it.

Yeah, the old "well he's popular so he must be good" argument, right? I dunno. It may be even more valid an argument for comics, who only want to have an audience.

Music Legitimacy Police really is as important a job as Comedy Legitimacy Police. There are tons of bands I'm supposed to like that I just do not. Same with comics. That's what makes us unique and interesting individuals.

Dane Cook is a good comic. Check out that interview and give him a shot. It changed my opinion of him for sure. He's not in my top ten comic list, but I believe he's earnest and truthful, and that's what I look for in a comic.

You're the one who made the "argument from popularity" argument for Cook. And only you.

So if that follows so does the Barry Manilow case. And all performers who achieve popular success are automatically fuckin' awesome and shit.

It's the dumbest argument ever but if you want to claim it as yours have a blast. I'd chop off my big toes before I'd stand on that plank but I'm not you. Good luck with it.

    Easily amused

    b/w

I listened to Maron's interviews with Cook and Mencia and neither one of them gave the impression that they were funny.
Cook comes off like a smart, driven guy, who found a way to assemble a stand up act that appeals to the sports bar/body shot crowd and made a shit load of money doing it.
That doesn't make him funny, just successful.
McDonalds rakes in the dough selling absolute garbage to people, but no one sane is calling their stuff good food.
Mencia came off like a sociopath.
