Do you ever get a bunch of records with the same DJ's stamp or signature on 'em and think "damn, I wish I could hear this guy's set back when he was spinning" or wonder what kind of crowd the DJ played to? I want to give a shout out to DJ Tammy- whoever she is- for her impeccable taste in rare and particularly female-friendly early 80s electro, garage, euro-disco, hip-hop, new wave; for keeping her records in shrinkwrap in immaculate condition; for being a mysterious lady out there that I will never know. I wouldn't be surpised if some of her records have leaked out to some other soul strutters. I found one of her records in Athens, GA after having bought like 50 of them in Baltimore a year before!

A lot of the Jazz and Rock records I find in my semi-small Swedish town belonged to a girl named Maria. She had good taste - Eddie Harris "Excursions", The If album with the bottle on it on Brain, Albert Aylers "Love Cry" and a bunch of other dope albums. I don't think she is or was a DJ, but she was quite anal- In the Inner sleeve of the If album, she wrote the day she bought it, what she did that day, even that it was cold outside! Not just "nice braek on Fly, fly the route".

At one point I had about 25 w/ a DJ Eric B stamp. Most were 4th and Broadway promos. I think the only one I kept was the Fania "Eric B for President" feat Rakim.

Almost all my Bowie records have a note on the inside of the covers, stating where and when dude bought them.

i've got an entire crate of stuff from a lesbian dj

bunch of stuff from a local 90's big wig DJ Matt C

and a grip of records with this cool stamp that says MO MO's on them

I'd like to shoutout Kay Bond and Tim Bu, etc. Two of the biggest heavyweight hip hop dj and R&B collector guys collections I've ever gotten. Tim Bu, etc is a legend in upstate NY. Oh, and Aloha Coleman had deep crates.

    Peace

I used to hit this spot at the Raleigh Fairgrounds flea market (R.I.P. Gene) that always had a grip of Dee Bailey's records. He was obviously a DJ in the 70s-80s cos he'd mark up the really hot songs along with signing his name "Mr. Dee Bailey" in big letters with a flourish. I bet he was in the military at some point 'cos I copped a few of his overseas pressings like Edwin Starr's WAR & PEACE and Bar Kays GOTTA GROOVE.

More recently I was finding TONS of perfectly-cared-for hiphop 12"s from the 80s-90s in local used bins, all stamped with the name JOHNNIE COOL and BPMd with a little circular label in the corner. Then one day I saw some woman and her son bringing in some crates to sell, so I caught them outside the spot to see if I could cop what the store didn't buy. I knew I'd hit the source 'cos every record had the JOHNNIE COOL stamp. I gave them my card and within the week I got a call from Johnnie himself. Turns out he was a cousin of Doug Clark of the Hot Nuts (local soul group that did blue material mostly for UNC frats from the 1950s all the way to the 90s - they had tons of albums with a few funky cuts), and he DJ'd lots of parties in the 80s-90s. Eventually I went out to his house and he had this huge storage shed packed with thousands of records literally stacked four feet high. Luckily everything was in perfect shape, looking unplayed, often in shrink, and most of them BPM'd.

I've raided a couple radio stations pretty hard..... I found one dudes collection in a thrift out here it was all very dope stuff. It didn't have a name but the previous owner had sticky notes on the records with title #s on em so I know all the ones with stick ems came from dudes crates some good stuff. All funk and good rock

    DJ Sl*de
    Min*s
    Disco D*c

are the main ones.... the first two specialised in b-boy braeks so you don't just find one copy of Spider Rap, Pleasure S/T, Treach 3, you find 2... not all rinked either!

I used to have nightmares that they would come knocking on my door demanding their stuff back coz their mom wasn't supposed to throw it out.

Back in '97, my brother's friend had gave me a record that was signed by JuJu of the Beatnuts. I totally forgot what the record was and as a matter of fact, that record is still sitting in my mom's apartment. Is this even related to the subject at hand?

Back in '97, my brother's friend had gave me a record that was signed by JuJu of the Beatnuts. I totally forgot what the record was and as a matter of fact, that record is still sitting in my mom's apartment. Is this even related to the subject at hand?

Not really, but the nuts did a photoshoot in front of my home last November coz it's garage stylee. One had a big white Suburban and the other a big white Expedition. I told them I got crates in there and they said "yeah? are they cheap?" Natural Born Diggers. That's what I'm talking about!

Doug Clark of the Hot Nuts (local soul group that did blue material mostly for UNC frats from the 1950s all the way to the 90s - they had tons of albums with a few funky cuts),

i've got one of his records .. found it at a flea market a couple years... kinda raunchy lo fi weird fratty stuff.

Right. Most of their stuff is strictly novelty and not funky at all. And I guess I'm using the term pretty loosely when I say they have "a few funky cuts" but the album I'm thinking of is FREAK OUT, which is the coolest-looking of theirs I've seen - a real grimy 60s-looking cover shot of the group in a weird room holding hookahs and (of course) giving you the finger. A couple of songs are mildly funky:

    With such classics as,

"What word begins with F and ends with U-C-K?
    I dunno.
    FIRETRUCK."

Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts released nine albums on their own Gross label. Recorded live, the albums have a definite party atmosphere.

By live, they must mean "we looped a crowd laughing" over and over again.

I was walking down the street in paris once and I passed the Boule Noir club and DJ Krush's record flight case was just sitting there,on the sidewalk, unattended, I thought about grabbing that thing and running...wonder what kind of raers were in there...

Years ago, I came across about 30 great old electro and freestyle records at Rooky's--stuff like Nocera, Trinere, Freestyle (the group), Noel, etc. All of them said "DJ P"* in magic marker on the labels, were BPMed, and had the opening kick marked in magic marker at the red strobe light position. That was new to me. (I mark at the needle, my girl marks at 12 o'clock, but I've never ever seen a record marked at the strobe.)

Thank you, DJ P, for helping me rock several parties. I bet your sets were killer; it's clear that you were well prepared.

*Not the DJ P that's down with Z-Trip, clearly.

it was during the day, I honestly think it got left behind during load in or something...

  • When I first started digging in the early '90's, I used to
come up on 12" singles with the logo "NATE THE BARTENDER" written
on the sleeves or label in big black marker. Many years later,
I mat my main man Nate through a hookup at the local wax spot.
Dude was dying of cancer, and was looking to unload the rest of
    his wax.
The rest of his wax was totally thrashed, unfourtunately, but I
had a great time talking and drinking PBR with the dude for an hour.
Turns out dude was the bartender at an old club here, and actually
HAD THE 1200's BEHIND THE BAR, AND POURED DRANKS AND SPUN AT THE SAME TIME!

I probably have 2-300 "Nate The Bartender" joints, all 12" singles.
Some are kinda whipped, but I just love the serendipity.

There was a dope collection by a dude named "RIP" at 2nd Time years ago that I got a lotta heat from. Oddly enuff there was a dude out at the swapmeet with a lot of 12's with a Grandmaster Flash stamp. Don't know if they were actually his or just a random biter.

not a DJ, but I have Willie Mitchell's copies of Archie Bell's "Tighten Up" LP and Blue Mitchell's "Blue's Blues" LP

I thought this would have been a blowup thread considering how many "diggers" there are round here, but maybe eBay has scattered this sort of shit far and wide across the US/UK/Japan/Germany.

As for the obviously non-DJs writing their names on their records, seems girls did it a lot more than guys. Was this coz they were being all girly or to stop their brothers stealing that shit!?

I found about 100 serious dub and roots LP's and 12's (Tubby, Scratch, Horace Andy, U-Roy, Scientist etc.) in a thrift store a few years ago all with initials "M.D." (Mikey Dread?) on them.
Another time I bough about 250 hip-hop 12"s from a guy named Dwayne Coles who was a DJ in Connecticut from the early 80's til the mid-90's. All the 12"s have "DC" on them. He was getting married and his fiancee said "it's me or the records!"

While we're on this subject does anyone out there own any salsa LP's with the name "Yacco" on them? Guy was a DJ in DC in the 70's and 80's. He wrote his name, address, the date he bought the record, and a one word review of each song on every record. I have 20-25 of these and they're all bangers (Fania, Tico, etc.). I've found them in DC and Baltimore and a friend of mine in LA found a few out there. I've always wanted to track the guy down.

I've got to say peace to Luc Tirez, a guy who works for national radio here in belgium. One day he dropped a whole bunch of 45's at a local spot. Most of it was poppy crap, but I scored some hiphop 7"s (Cash money & marvelous, De La Soul, Public Enemy,...).

In the same spot, I bought some hiphop 12"s and Lp's, with the name "Lamont" written on it. it's the same Lamont who is on soulstrut once in a while

Was she named Amy by any chance? And is she remarrying a british "soulboy"?
