Studio headphones-strut (advice related)

OK, I need some advice from you studio/engineer/producer dudes: What are the best headphones for studio use? Every time I buy headphones, it's with DJing in mind, but now I need a pair with good enough sound that I can EQ and/or mix in them. Any recommendations?

    but just a word of advice, try not to mixdown on headphones. They are good to just monitor what your doing, but when you want to get a good mix do it thru a set of studio monitors. Its hard to get a good quailty mix of cans.

    Yeah, I typically do mixdowns on studio monitors, but sometimes I end up working on music late at night when I can't really play out through the monitors (damn noise rules in my building), so it'd be nice to have headphones that I can work in and still be somewhat confident in the results, ya know?

    yeah then those are fine. I heard good things about the first set i posted. i have the akgs and they work good for me.

    sony 7506s are some of the best you can get
    i think they are around $100
    every studio ive ever been in has had a pair or 5

    the Sennheiser HD 280's should be fine, they are half the price of the Senn's posted. I can't see any reason to have $200 headphones in your studio if you're just using them to work. The 280s are straight. I'd stay away from AKG, but that's my personal opinion.

    Really, you should mix both with headphones and with monitors. If you can come up with a mix that sounds good both ways then you're onto something. The truth of the matter these days is that most people listen to their music on headphones in a lot of situations so you have to account for that.


    As far as headphones go, once again I'll throw in my support for Grado headphones. Even the cheapest ones sound really good.

    thats true, but as long as you get in that monitor mix your straight. Its good to hear a mix thru all different types of speakers like earbuds and boombox or car stereos, home stereos etc...

    But yeah the ones i listed are more higher end models. I like to spend the money if i have it for that better quailty. But you can get buy and do fine with lower end models.

    I sold studio headphones for 3 years and have tried alot of different models and makes...for $100 the top three on the market are the AKG K240S, Sony MDRV7506, and the newjack sleeper the Sennheiser HD280...I like the Sennheiser because it's more of a closed ear design and I can use it for DJ as well as recording, If I were you I would go to Guitar Center and try on all three! If you want to spend a little more try out the Beyer Dynamics headphones, really nice!

    Enki - it's Wazzlez from the Z-Trip boards, just joined here. You should DEFINATELY hit up Leo's Pro Audio over Oakland side of Telegraph and test out the Ultrasone HFI-550 headphones. They are by far the best headphones I've ever used, miles beyond the staple AKG 240s or Sony MDR-V6.

    has anyone checked out grado labs phones? I went to school for mixing and production and my teachers strongly recomended them. The sr80's and 125's are affordable and from what I hear they are top notch. Their line gets pretty exspensive as you go up, the most exspensive being the gs1000's for $1000!
