So i get this record from a dealer on gemm today (after waiting a month cause dude was new to selling on gemm and was hesitant to mail the record until their finally cleared his payment and mailed him the cheque) and it's packed in this flimsy as fuck mailer - bubble wrap stuck to paper. And this is how dude packs a AU$100 record!FUCK!Cover was all bent on the corners and shitAnd now that I look at it, I'm not even sure it's an OG copy! Please to tell me what colour the cardboard is on Tyrone Thomas - Has Arrived LP

  • I have neither fucked a UK dealer nor their flimsy mailers.

Maybe this should go in the "Have You Ever Been In A Porno (NRR)" thread.

I must admit that those thin cardboard mailers drive me nuts too. Most dealers are smart enough to throw in an extra piece of cardboard. Maybe that should be most 'reputable' dealers.....

  • i'm sure there are credible sellers on gemm, but with me it's been nothing but bad experiences. no responses to emails, bad packaging, faulty grading, you name it.

  • The board knows my feelings on this. Overseas dudes just please outfit your LPs for mailing n shit.

This is not an anti-european stance, but an anti-european-mailer one. Have stayed away for a few months from the overseas buys for this reason, plus they take 3 weeks to get here.

Just lately I recanted and bought a few things from Europe. Let's hope I don't get an LP wrapped in a napkin...

LAst record I bought from the UK came to me wrapped in NEWSPAPER! That's it - just some newspapers. Amazingly though, it did not break.

It's not his fault, he thought you ordered the fish n chips.

    BLIMEY!

  • I got a record in one of these UK mailers just last week. The top flap that they just lick and stick was half open. I was shocked that it made it in one piece.

Maybe people should sent payment to UK sellers in a real mailer, and ask that their record be sent back in it!?

my original is white inside the cover - I don't even think this one was reissued/bootlegged

I've had many records from around the world mailed to me in newspaper......until I learnt this -

Take the initiative, and tell the seller how you want your record packed. After all, it's you paying for it.

I got a record coming in the mail from the UK *crosses fingers*.

Oddly enough, the last time I ordered from the UK and got a flimsy mailer, it was the first album by the same group.

It's only the UK. I think that French, German and Italian record mailers are way better than the US ones. In fact, German record mailers are invincible! BUT, extra cardboards are ALWAYS needed. No doubt about that.

UK mailers are horrible though. UK dealers even pack 200 Euro records in those thin mailers. Maybe, they don't know how rude some postal services can be.

Well, no it's not. Some brands of mailers worldwide are poor.

Like I said, take charge of the situation and demand what your record gets shipped in , and the amount of protection you require. It's your money, and you have every right.

I have my terms and conditions as part of my signature on my email address. No problems at all since.

  • whato dudes. Not fighting the corner for gold ole Team UK or anything, but I've only ever had bad mailer experiences off US sellers. Couple of ebay deals have come through in a jiffy bag with no cardboard stiffeners. Dog eared corners ahoy. I'm not about to lay blame on any one nation for their odd habits, but just thought the point needs to be made that dodgy packing can come from any corner of the globe.

Also, cosigning Belson's comments - if you're paying 200 bucks for a platter, email them and say you want it packed in a suit of fucking armour from the Tower of fakkin London mate.

Gotta agree on this, my only problem with mailers have been this one guy from the US who sent a 7" single just in newspaper and when i told him it was broken when it arrived he said he could send another one and even though i told him he couldn't package in newspaper, guess what, moron did it again and yes it was broken the second time aswell..

..not a UK thing i would say, more like an idiot thing..

Now italians and grading, that's a whooooole other thing (partly joke)

For $200 I would ideally want it packed in starlight and floated to me on a cloud but if I'm spending any significant amount on a record I ask the seller how they'll be sending it.

  • No proper dealer is going to send a record to the other side of the planet protected by nothing more than some paper and bubble wrap. The problem with the net is that anyone can become a dealer, it doesn't mean you'll get professional service from them. As Belson says ask for proper packaging, lots of people do.

Have you emailed the seller and complained? You should complain to Gemm as well as Gemm should instruct their sellers how to package a record properly. So should ebay.

My personal favourite packaging was from a Russian seller who sent the record wrapped in some nasty old brown paper that had been stuck down with some sort of strange horse hoof glue concoction and then tied up with some of that spikey nasty brown string. It was topped off with an amusing 'Record album - Please no folding or bending' type message. You really had to be there to appreciate it's beauty.

Yeah I hear y'all, it is not a nationality thing per say. I mean, the only record that ever broke on its way to me was froma Canadian seller that sent it in bubblewrap, but if I had to break it down personally by nation, maybe about half the time I get records from the UK, they are packed in flimsy mailers, or worse as was the case today.

I'm sure it's a case of whatever happens to be locally available for dudes, but fuck - from now on, I will be asking sellers about this every time.

Enuff already...I use these so called 'flimsy' mailers but ALWAYS put plenty extra cardboard stiffeners inside too - anybody who doesn't use proper card stiffeners or something else equally sturdy is a dick - make sure ya tell em (stiffeners have to be a snug fit inside the mailer too - no unprotected seams/surfaces either!)

The idea of sending recs inside mailers without extra stiffeners is just madness...but...people still do it all of the time...

    Peace!

jazz reviewer in milwaukee used to send me his collection media mail 40 peices at a time back in the day.

    how did he do it?

he threw them shits in a paper bag and duct taped the shit out of it.

i really didnt complain since he was sending penny goodwin and shit.

haha those are terrible. BUT at least in the US you CAN get nice LP mailers from Bags Unlimited. I don't think I've EVER gotten anything from the UK that wasn't in one of those shitty envelope things. I mean sure there are morons everywhere, but at least here you have the option of doing things right.

Ok - I'm convinced - where do I go to become an 'American' - the place where everything is nice and easy and priced in dollars and where all of the records always arrive promptly in pretty, perfect mailers...?

    Please let me in...

    PLEASE!

Haha, it came in the mail today in nice regular packaging, with an extra sheet of cardboard too. I was about to type my praise at a non-flismy UK delivery. Upon further inquiry the record came from NY.

  • somewhat unrelated - I bought a (fake as fuck) new era 5950 boston hat from some schmuck on ebay from UK i think and this asshole sent it in an ENVELOPE. a big manilla envelope. We're talking new era here, hats known for having a sturdy brim and crown, something you should put in a fucking box. Needless to say, this shit arrived looking like a crumpled piece of newspaper. Plus it was fake as fuck. A horrible bootleg somebody probably made at one of those hat embroidery shops. Mail order is frustrating.

  • Once I bought a record from a privat seller who had 100 % ratings and all. The reocrd cost about 70 Euros + 5 Euros for shipping and this dickhead send me the record just rolled in paper.

Dogears on every corner it is a wonder that the record was not broke.

I told him that this is not what I bought from him and that this record has not the grading he said it has in his description because he was not able to send it in a proper way.

Guess what he answered. "What is the problem ??? I'm selling records not covers"

He is right, I wanted the record, fuck the cover, fuck if another buyer will never give me 70 Euros for this record beacuse it is not NM it is not even NVG.
