A friend of mine is trying to figure out who was Thomas' drummer on his major hits: Breakdown, Funky Penguin, Push and Pull, etc. Anyone know?

  • I'm guessing it was Willie Hall, who was the drummer with the Bar-Kays. They doubled as the Stax house band from about 1969 onward, so that was probably them throwing down behind Rufus on his funkier sides.

Was Al Jackson not Stax house drummer in '72? Guess he was doing session stuff outside of Stax by then. Just checked, AMG gives the album credit to Willie Hall and Herb Lovelle...

  • Most of Rufus's stuff has Willie playing behind him...the other stuff has Herbie Lovelle. Willie Hall shared my drum kit with me at a show one time.

Other than the early stuff I don't think Al Jackson played with Rufus.
